Alundra is one of the finest PS1 action-RPGs, deeply inspired by Zelda but with fiendishly difficult dream puzzles. The dark and mature story, likable characters and memorable soundtrack make it an unjustly overlooked masterpiece.

Collector interest

An action-RPG long flying under the radar, whose value rose as its reputation as a hidden classic took hold. The European and American runs, never large, now struggle to meet a loyal niche demand. The American localization by Working Designs, admired for its care, adds a layer of interest depending on provenance. Its desirability rests on recognized quality far more than on any passing trend.

An underrated gem

Often named one of the console's finest 2D action-RPGs, it never reached the fame it deserves, eclipsed by the 3D wave of its time. Its fearsome puzzles and surprisingly dark story, peopled with nightmares, leave a lasting mark. A demanding Zelda-like to recommend to fans of devious dungeons and grown-up tales.

Is Alundra still worth playing in 2026?

Alundra is one of the PS1's best action RPGs, deeply Zelda-inspired but with mind puzzles of formidable difficulty. The dark, mature story by Working Designs, endearing characters and Kohei Tanaka's memorable score make for an experience of rare emotional density. A cult classic to absolutely discover today.
