Battletoads on Game Boy, much less savage than the NES original. Varied stages (race, surf, brawl), polished Rare animation, generous cartoon humor. Difficulty stays harsh but less absurd than other versions. A snappy and demanding Game Boy worth a try.

Collector interest

Battletoads, the Western edition of Tradewest's cult beat 'em up on Game Boy, carried by the series' legendary difficulty. Widely distributed in America and Europe, it stays more accessible than the Japanese version, its standalone value remaining measured. Its collecting interest plays out in regional comparison and in fans' loyalty to the toads, now an icon of gaming harshness.

Is Battletoads still worth playing in 2026?

Battletoads on Game Boy carries the notorious reputation of Rare's series, a beat'em up broken up by racing and surfing sections of legendary difficulty. The exaggerated special moves of the three toads have real impact, and the variety of sequences avoids monotony. But the merciless difficulty and reduced readability on a small screen make the adventure as frustrating as it is demanding. A snappy, inventive title, best reserved for masochistic old school action fans ready to retry again and again without giving up.
