Sega builds a storybook castle where every floor changes material: a toy forest in candy colours, a library whose books serve as platforms, a land of cakes, a clock room of giant cogs. Mickey keeps his cartoon suppleness, bouncing hat and cushioned landings. A pastel palette held under control from end to end.
The themes follow storybook logic: playful refrains for the toy forest, a music-box waltz in the library, an anxious motif as the witch draws near. The FM chip is used for roundness rather than aggression, with muffled bass and simple melodies that stick from the first listen.
Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse is the USA/EU edition of the Sega game, one of the most emblematic 16-bit Disney titles with its graphics by Emiko Yamamoto.
