Mid-series 2K iteration. Notable improvements but overshadowed by the 2K5 version two years later. Solid for its time, but better to choose later versions today.

The arena fills and empties over the course of the game: the stands start sparse, fill up before the tip-off, and part of the crowd leaves the rows once the gap widens. The benches come alive too, towels, coaching gestures and substitutes on their feet, giving the sidelines as much life as the court.

Collector interest

An earlier entry of Visual Concepts' basketball under the ESPN label, which laid the foundations of the brand's acclaimed sim on the original Xbox. Its collecting interest stays low: a sports game dated by its rosters, soon superseded by its sequel and with no marked scarcity. A nostalgia piece for fans of virtual basketball of the Xbox era attached to this first cut.

Is ESPN NBA Basketball still worth playing in 2026?

The first major collaboration between ESPN and Visual Concepts for the 2003 2004 season laid the groundwork for what would peak the following year. Presentation, player modelling and franchise depth were already comfortably above the competition, and the on court play remains readable today. The dribble system does not yet match the suppleness of the later IsoMotion. The online servers are long closed and the rosters carry no statistical relevance now. Best recommended today for nostalgic basketball fans and for collectors hunting the early ESPN branded sports line up.
