Next Level Games deliberately dirties a family of characters that is always kept clean. Mario and his rivals get dented breastplates, scuffed shin guards, clenched grimaces and a storm lighting that hollows out their faces. The line stays recognisable but the palette turns to metal and electric blue, as if the mascot had been handed to a heavy metal sleeve illustrator.
The soundtrack drops the usual orchestra for saturated guitars. Short palm-muted riffs, double bass drum, bass pushed forward: every captain gets a variation, heavier for the big frames, edgier for the fast ones, and the track hardens a notch as the score tightens. A rare case of a Nintendo mascot handed over to a metal band.
