Collector interest

A Microsoft mech action game, one of the first to use Xbox Live for online multiplayer, a showcase of the console's connected ambitions. Printed widely, it stays accessible and lightly priced, its servers closed. Its collector interest lies in this historic role as an Xbox online-play pioneer rather than manufacturing scarcity.

Better with friends

Heavy mech combat where you pilot steel colossi across razable urban arenas, several over system link or split-screen. The competition blends firepower, heat management and use of destructible scenery, where surprising your opponent with a well-placed shot makes all the difference. The era's online is gone, but local-network play keeps all its tactical, spectacular flavor.

Is MechAssault still worth playing in 2026?

Released in 2002, Day 1 Studios' project takes the mecha into pure arcade territory inside the BattleTech universe. The piloting favours readability and instant gratification, with very generous explosions and a still effective sense of devastation. The Xbox Live multiplayer made it one of the first major banners of the service. The controls are radically simplified compared to the MechWarrior simulation and the campaign feels repetitive. Recommended today for mecha fans who want immediate action and for nostalgics of the early days of Xbox Live as a console online service.
