A questionable morality

Conjuring a monster out of a disc feels like a magic trick, but what follows is mostly making it slog through training, scolding it and marching it into battle before it ages and dies. You play the devoted breeder while working each beast to the bone, convinced you're giving it a fine life as a duly profitable competitor.

Is Monster Rancher still worth playing in 2026?

Known as Monster Rancher in the West and Monster Farm in Japan, this Tecmo title invites you to raise, train and battle creatures, with its brilliant gimmick of generating monsters from any CD slotted into the console. The loop of training, tournaments and discovery keeps a strong addictive pull. The demanding raising and modest production call for investment. An endearing monster simulation for fans of management collection and the curious about a singular concept.
