A spellbinding Taisho setting and a detective plot that stand out in the Atlus catalog. The remaster smooths the original's rough edges, though a few combat mechanics still feel a little stiff.

This remastered version lifts the Taisho-era demonology world into high definition. Reworked models, modern lighting and deep colors revive a 1920s imperial capital of cobbled alleys, hushed cafes and shrines. The demons, designed by Kazuma Kaneko, regain all their unsettling relief when the young detective makes them spring from a summoning tube.
Where one might expect only traditional sonorities, the reworked score foregrounds the modern side of the Taisho era, that of fashionable cafes and Westernized culture. Touches of hushed jazz and swing accompany the city scenes, while the fights against demons tip toward a nervy rock and emphatic electronic rhythms.
The investigation opens with a chilling request: a young girl, Kaya, begs to be killed before she is taken. Tracing the case, the young detective unearths a conspiracy where an army of soulless soldiers, emptied and disposable bodies, serves the ambitions of an industrialist bent on resurrecting the glory of a fallen empire.

The bosses blend real-time action and demon summoning: calling the right creature at the right moment turns otherwise fearsome duels around. Rooted in the Taisho atmosphere, these supernatural clashes give the game its most striking moments.
An underrated gem
An atypical Megami Tensei spin-off, this Taisho-flavored Devil Summoner stands apart from the rest of the Atlus catalog. For its spellbinding setting and its blend of investigation, action and demons, it's a gem for RPG fans who like to leave the beaten path.
