A precious dive into SNK's golden arcade age, with its forgotten shmups and brawlers. The emulation is spotless and the historical extras are genuinely fascinating. Some titles have aged poorly, but the preservation work is exemplary for heritage buffs.

Better with friends

Diving back into SNK's arcade catalogue in pairs unearths an era when everyone huddled around the cabinet. Depending on the title you either cooperate to survive the waves or trade challenges pad in hand, and the collection slides between the two without ceremony. Nostalgia does a lot of the work, but the real joy is the shared laughter over a sudden game over. Easy to boot up for a few improvised credits, perfect among friends who know these classics.

Is SNK 40th Anniversary Collection still worth playing in 2026?

This anthology is first and foremost a matter for video game history enthusiasts. It exhumes SNK's earliest titles, predating Neo Geo glory, and most of them clearly show their age, stiff and dated in their design. The value lies elsewhere, in preservation, presentation quality and the archive galleries that document a studio's emergence. For the player curious about gaming archaeology or the collector, it is a goldmine. For anyone after immediate, modern fun, the appeal will be more measured and rather museum-like.
