Game Boy adaptation of European run-and-gun Turrican. Varied weapons (wrapping laser), level exploration, robotic enemies. The GB engine struggles to do justice to the Amiga/C64 original; the platforming holds, but without the flair. Pleasant for Factor 5 fans, minor on Game Boy next to Contra or Metroid II.

Turrican, an Accolade action game in which an armoured soldier battles enemy hordes across vast levels, released in America and Europe. A portable adaptation of an action-and-exploration licence born on home computers, it charms through its scale and arsenal. Its desirability lies in the Turrican series' cult aura, a measured Game Boy distribution and the interest of fans of exploration-driven run-and-guns.

Is Turrican still worth playing in 2026?

A Game Boy port of the European run and gun benchmark, Turrican sends an armoured soldier to pulverise hordes of robots across open levels mixing shooting, exploration and platforming. The spinning wheel, the steerable laser and the verticality of the settings offer a freedom rare for the format. The conversion suffers from technical limits, with readability and smoothness below the computer versions. For a fan of old school run and gun or someone curious about the Turrican saga, the title keeps a mostly heritage interest.
