An exemplary remake that lays gorgeous hand-drawn art over the original engine, toggleable at the press of a button. The Master System metroidvania keeps its charm despite its age: animal transformations, backtracking, secrets. Short but chiseled with obvious love.

The Master System classic is reborn entirely hand-drawn: silky watercolours, fluid animation and an instant toggle between the old 8-bit look and the new. This loving remaster proves that a careful brushstroke can transcend a thirty-year-old sprite.

Memorable bosses

A pure arcade creation, the game strings together animal guardians whose readable patterns hide a fearsome demand. The hero's metamorphosis changes everything: lizard, mouse or lion form alters reach and attack angle, reshaping the strategy against each guardian. The lavish hand-drawn art and reorchestrated score elevate duels of merciless timing, true to the Master System spirit.

An underrated gem

Resurrecting an obscure 8-bit title as a hand-drawn masterpiece was no obvious feat, and the result impresses: a gorgeous instant toggle between painted graphics and retro rendering accompanies an interconnected adventure where you shift animal form to open new paths. A tribute to a little-known classic, it suffered from its source's confidential fame. Its timeless charm and exploration structure remain a treat. To be discovered by lovers of demanding, elegant platforming.

Is Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap still worth playing in 2026?

Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap is a model of respectful remake. DotEmu redrew the entire adventure by hand while letting you switch on the fly to the original graphics and music, a delightful act of preservation. The core, built on animal transformations with distinct abilities and interconnected exploration, has held up remarkably and keeps a modern readability. A few rigidities inherited from the 8-bit era remain, notably in the controls. But as a gateway to an overlooked classic, the charm works fully today.
