Xenogears is an absolute Square masterpiece. Profound philosophical narrative exploring Jungian psychology, religion, consciousness and identity through Fei Fong Wong's story. Giant mecha and on-foot battles with unique combo system. Sumptuous Yasunori Mitsuda soundtrack. An unsurpassable JRPG monument.

A Square RPG of outsized narrative ambition, blending hand-to-hand combat and giant-robot duels against a backdrop of philosophical and religious themes, become an object of devotion. Its measured runs make it a markedly sought piece, across all regions, with a rising value. Its fervent demand and cult-classic status support a high, lasting value.

Is Xenogears still worth playing in 2026?

Released in 1998 on PS1 in Japan and later in the West, Square's project under Tetsuya Takahashi's direction installs one of the most ambitious narratives the studio has ever produced. The blend of classical role playing, mecha combat and Jungian psychology inspired reflections remains without equivalent. The anime art direction and Yasunori Mitsuda's music are magnificent. The second disc suffers from a shortened development, and the 2D and 3D modelling has aged. Strongly recommended today for any authorial JRPG devotee and for Square fans curious about a defining studio peak on Sony's first home console hardware globally.
