Nintendo 64: history and collecting

Released in 1996, the Nintendo 64 was the last major cartridge-based home console. It revolutionized 3D gaming with its analog stick, popularized rumble (the Rumble Pak) and became the king of couch multiplayer with its four controller ports. Its cartridge format, fast but costly, nonetheless pushed many third parties toward the PlayStation's CD.

Its library holds true revolutions: Super Mario 64 reinvented 3D platforming, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time redefined adventure, GoldenEye 007 made the console FPS a genre of its own and Banjo-Kazooie took the collectathon platformer to its peak. For collectors, the Nintendo 64 is highly sought after, especially boxed: the fragile cardboard packaging makes complete copies rare.
