A decent Master System port of Sega's arcade classic. The rush of dodging missiles at full speed still works even if the visuals have aged. Not arcade-perfect but fun enough for a spin.

Collector interest

An 8-bit adaptation of Sega's famous After Burner, a cockpit-view fighter simulation with high-speed aerial combat, drawn from the emblematic super-scaler arcade. Its desirability rests on the challenge of transposing such a spectacular arcade game to the console and the title's place in the golden age of Sega conversions. Collectors seek this North American edition for its technical ambition and prestigious arcade lineage.

Is After Burner still worth playing in 2026?

A port of Sega's famous arcade rail shooter, After Burner puts you at the controls of a fighter hurled at full speed against swarms of enemy planes, in rear view. The 8 bit conversion inevitably loses spectacle against the cabinet, but keeps the sense of speed, the missile lock and the adrenaline of dodging. The repetition and the technical roughness betray the machine's limits. For a retro rail shooter fan or someone nostalgic for Sega arcade, the title keeps a raw energy and a definite immediate pleasure.
