Konami reproduces the line of the animated series with an accuracy that extends to the transitional poses: elastic silhouettes, thick outlines, television cartoon colours. The levels cross film sets, a horror movie, a western, a fairy tale, each redrawn in the style of the genre being parodied rather than in that of the game.
The soundtrack pastiches as much as the image: a cartoon orchestra, brass commenting on every fall, harpsichord in the gothic level, acoustic guitar in the western. Konami pushes the device to synchronising certain musical accents with the on screen gags, which gives the game the rhythm of a short film rather than of a platformer.
A platformer from Konami, Animaniacs draws on the zany world of the Warner cartoon with the three Warners and a cooperation system between characters with complementary abilities. The cartoon humour, the expressive animations and the collect the items level structure stay charming. The slightly peculiar handling and uneven difficulty can throw players. An endearing platformer that will delight nostalgics of the animated series and fans of Konami's 16 bit craft.
