The port of the PS1 classic where over 200 mutant monkeys must be chased down with delightfully silly gadgets. Nostalgia hits hard, the level design still holds up, and SCEJ's humour hasn't aged a day.

Is Ape Escape - On the Loose still worth playing in 2026?

A PSP remake of Sony's classic, Ape Escape has you play Spike, who hunts mutant monkeys across time and space with varied gadgets, from the net to the flying propeller. The capture concept, the inventiveness of the environments and the good natured humour carry a charming action adventure, though adapting controls designed for the PS1's two sticks to the PSP stays a compromise. The game's charm remains. For a fan of retro action adventure or someone curious about the original, the title keeps a lasting freshness and inventiveness.
