Rocksteady invent the modern Batman game with a gothic, suffocating asylum, freeflow combat unlike anything before and a deliciously theatrical Joker. A masterclass in tight level design that puts the Dark Knight back on top of the medium.

Story

"Masterful"
A nocturnal, gothic, rainy Gotham bathed in shadow and neon: the city becomes a character in its own right. The polished design of the enemies and the dark-comic atmosphere compose a striking visual identity. This art direction, dense and stylish, gave the superhero game its credentials.
Trapped in an asylum the Joker has seized control of, the Dark Knight faces his entire rogues' gallery in a single night. The tale distils a remarkable psychological tension, down to nightmarish plunges into the hero's own mind. This mature writing, faithful to the myth, at last gave the vigilante a great game worthy of him.
Gameplay
"Masterful"
Linking strikes, counters and gadgets into a single flow turns combat into a ballet of intoxicating fluidity, where reading your enemies is everything. The predator sections, where you pick off guards from the shadows, vary the tempo with real cunning. The benchmark for licensed action-adventure, the asylum retains a handling and a sense of rhythm that haven't aged a day.

Batman - Arkham Asylum (Xbox 360) price, value & rarity
North American (NTSC-U) edition of Batman Arkham Asylum, a Rocksteady action-adventure that reinvented the superhero game through stealth, fluid combat and atmosphere, a success that revived genre adaptations. Very widespread in North America, its collector interest is modest, the Game of the Year edition being preferred for its content. An emblematic but accessible piece, whose desirability rests on its founding role rather than scarcity.
Is Batman - Arkham Asylum still worth playing in 2026?
Released in 2009 on Xbox 360, Rocksteady's project redefined the superhero game and keeps its power fully intact today. Its flow combat, built on combos and precisely timed counters, remains a template copied everywhere since. The predator stages, where you pick off guards from the gargoyles, brew an exhilarating tension. The asylum, designed as one large interconnected space, brims with detail for Dark Knight connoisseurs. A few boss fights disappoint, but the whole has aged beautifully. For fans of action and of Batman, it stands as a triumph that still shines brightly.
