Kuju treats its armies like painted figurines. The soldiers keep the stocky proportions and round faces of the series but are given a moulded plastic finish here, with blunt faction colours, olive green, lacquered red, steel grey, that let you sort a melee at a glance. The battlefields themselves are laid out like a gaming table, with clean ridges and neatly cut treelines.
Each army gets its own march, and each march is a caricature. Brass fanfare for one, sour strings and cymbals for another, dry drums for the third: the orchestration states allegiance before the unit even appears. Layers pile up as reinforcements arrive, so the scale of the piece gives the measure of the battle under way.
A real time strategy and action game from Kuju, Battalion Wars 2 spins off the Advance Wars series towards a 3D battlefield where you command your units directly while taking control of each one. The blend of tactics and snappy action, the troop variety and the military cartoon mood stay enjoyable. The sometimes confusing handling and a closed online mode cap the experience. An original, dynamic title for fans of action strategy and Nintendo's Wars galaxy.
