Description
Fourth entry following two dragons with intertwined fates, hero Ryu and fallen emperor Fou-Lu. RPG by Capcom, released in 2000 in the United States and in 2001 in Europe. Three-on-the-front combat with rear swap, detailed sprites over 3D backdrops, dragon transformations and Yoshino Aoki's score. European multilingual editions.
The last 2D Breath of Fire, marrying pre-rendered backdrops with expressive sprites to close an era of the Capcom RPG. Its late Western release, at the dawn of the PlayStation 2, earned it a reduced run that feeds its desirability today. The interest lies in this end-of-line position and in the execution quality of a genre the publisher would then almost entirely abandon.
Is Breath of Fire IV still worth playing in 2026?
Breath of Fire IV is a beautifully crafted Capcom JRPG with stunning 2D animation by Tatsuya Yoshikawa at his peak. Enriched combat and a mature scenario with two alternating protagonists (Ryu and Fou-lu) make it one of the PS1's loveliest JRPGs. Yoshino Aoki's score is particularly successful, and the bold orientalist writing leaves a lasting mark. An absolute peak to discover today.
