Charming and inventive puzzle-platformer starring Toad. Inspired diorama levels, well-used GamePad, progressive difficulty. Short but idea-dense. A game that is both accessible and clever, proving Nintendo can innovate with little.

Each level is a closed box you rotate around its axis, which requires composing a setting legible from every angle and hiding objects behind volumes rather than off-screen. The materials are treated like those of a model, corrugated card, plush, moulded plastic, so the world resembles an object placed on a table.
The instrumentation stays deliberately modest, acoustic guitar, flute, light percussion, chamber writing suited to a character unable to jump who advances in small steps. The themes close on themselves in short loops, with no dramatic build, which leaves the study of the diorama the time it demands.
Captain Toad Treasure Tracker, a Nintendo puzzle-and-exploration game spun off from Super Mario 3D World, with jeweler's charm in its rotate-and-search dioramas. Sought on a console with a coveted library, its desirability rests on its status as an exclusive little gem and limited Western runs rather than a manufactured scarcity, the Japanese run being a touch more common. A prime piece for a Nintendo set.
Is Captain Toad - Treasure Tracker still worth playing in 2026?
A Wii U exclusive puzzle platformer by Nintendo, Captain Toad Treasure Tracker offers a 3D adventure where the cute Captain Toad must recover treasures in miniature dioramas without being able to jump. The adorable art direction, ingenious puzzles and accessible handling make it an absolutely unmissable gem of the Wii U catalogue. For anyone fond of original 3D puzzles or seeking an absolutely essential charming Nintendo game, an absolutely essential recommendation today still without any hesitation on the Nintendo machine truly here indeed.
