Survival horror aboard a stricken oil tanker drawing on genre conventions. The oppressive atmosphere and honest story work well, but the title suffers from below-par production compared to competitors. A decent option for genre fans.

A 2005 Darkworks survival horror published by Ubisoft, transposing the Resident Evil 4 template onto a Russian whaling ship caught in a violent storm. Over-the-shoulder camera, churning seas and a claustrophobic mood make it a solid alternative that has often been unfairly overlooked.

Is Cold Fear still worth playing in 2026?

A survival horror and action game from Darkworks, Cold Fear drops a coast guard onto a Russian whaler caught in a storm and infested with parasitic creatures, in an oppressive atmosphere where the rolling ship destabilises your aim. The third person shooting system with free aim, the tense maritime mood and the sense of constant danger make it an effective, snappy survival horror from a French studio. The decent production and the modest length temper the whole. A good game for fans of action horror and tension on PS2.
