Westwood commits to a nineteen fifties propaganda look: posters, insignia, uniforms and vehicles drawn as if for a recruitment board. The live action sequences, with real actors in formica command rooms and wall maps, cement that tone of serious yet slightly overplayed alternate history, here fully dubbed into French.
Frank Klepacki's score works in three registers: industrial metal for the assaults, creeping pieces for the infiltrations and almost silent atmospheres while the map is being uncovered. On PlayStation those tracks loop without wearing thin and give the conflict a sonic identity that few strategy games have matched.
The premise rewires the twentieth century: deprived of its German dictator, Europe falls under pressure from the Red Army, and two campaigns tell the same war from irreconcilable sides. The video actors, the briefings played with brio and the opposing endings hold this military fiction together with a delightfully straight face.
