The whole staging rests on a contrast of scale. On the tactical map the mechs are small deformed figurines, squat and cute, sliding tile to tile. Then comes the attack: the view shifts, the machine regains its heroic proportions and unleashes its technique in a detailed panel. This brutal jump from SD token to carefully drawn colossus is the entire visual relish of the Alpha series.
Alpha 2's musical reputation rests on the quality of its arrangements. Banpresto's sound team re-orchestrates each series' theme with a jeweler's care, fuller brass, tighter percussion, bridges rewritten for turn-based action. Many fans hold these versions as the definitive ones, preferred over the televised originals. Here it is not recognition that counts, but the craft of orchestration itself.
Far from merely lining up guests, the story leans on its own characters. The player creates a pilot among the Alpha Numbers, and home-grown figures, enigmatic allies and alien antagonists from Balmar alike, serve as cement for all the borrowed universes. It is these original creations, not the licensed stars, that hold the plot together and give the war its own stakes.

Leveling your pilots, hunting the secret units and enjoying the attack animations pushes you to unlock everything. That blend of fan service and demanding tactics explains a longevity dear to fans of the genre.

Dai-2-ji Super Robot Taisen Alpha (PS2) price, value & rarity
The Genteiban Collection Figure Box edition of the Second Super Robot Taisen Alpha, Banpresto's legendary crossover SRPG that gathers Mazinger, Gundam, Evangelion and many more in tactical battles with polished animations. This limited edition stands out for the included figures, rarely kept with the game, which make it the most coveted form. Desirability blends the aura of the Super Robot Wars saga with the scarcity of this figure box.
Is Dai-2-ji Super Robot Taisen Alpha still worth playing in 2026?
A tactical RPG from Banpresto, Dai-2-ji Super Robot Taisen Alpha gathers mechs from dozens of cult anime into turn based grid battles, carried by sumptuous attack animations and an ambitious crossover scenario. The pleasure of seeing robots from different series converge, the tactical depth and the staging make it a peak of the saga's Alpha branch. The busy interface, the grinding and the Japanese text close off access. An excellent game for fans of Japanese tactical RPGs and animation robots on PS2.
