The first Stafy, Nintendo's aquatic mascot that stayed in Japan. Colorful and accessible platformer, full of charm. Genuinely deserves discovery outside Japan.

Underwater platform game developed by TOSE and published by Nintendo in Japan in September 2002. Stafy, a clumsy little starfish who fell from the sky, explores the ocean depths and land areas to return to his celestial castle. Spinning tornado attack, eight themed worlds with varied environments, supporting characters to help and aquatic bosses. Very colorful childlike aesthetic and catchy music. First episode of a Japan-exclusive GBA series.

An underrated gem

A clumsy little star fallen from the sky, Stafy dives into a tender underwater platformer that stayed confined to Japan despite its obvious charm. Its very gentle, accessible nature made Western audiences write it off as a minor game. Colorful and sweet, it'll delight fans of breezy platforming and anyone curious about Nintendo's forgotten mascots.

Is Densetsu no Stafy still worth playing in 2026?

An underwater platformer from TOSE and Nintendo, Densetsu no Stafy follows a clumsy little starfish exploring seabeds and land zones to return to his celestial castle. Swim control, the spin attack and the tender, colorful world give off undeniable charm, in the accessible vein of Nintendo productions. The difficulty stays gentle and the formula simple. Kept in Japan, it is a lovely gem for fans of cute platforming and the curious about an overlooked mascot.
