A solid Master System port of EA's helicopter tactical shooter. The open-map design and strategic element survive the downgrade well. Some graphical concessions vs the Mega Drive version but still enjoyable.

A Master System adaptation of Desert Strike, the Apache-helicopter strategic action popularised on 16-bit consoles, published late in Europe via Domark. Reducing this tactical action game to 8 bits was unusual, and its end-of-cycle release limited its distribution. Its desirability rests on the scarcity of this ambitious conversion and a steady value among the console's military-action fans, sought complete.

Is Desert Strike still worth playing in 2026?

An adaptation of Electronic Arts' strategic action game, Desert Strike puts you at the controls of an Apache helicopter tasked with destruction and rescue missions in a desert conflict, in isometric view. Managing fuel, ammo and hostages adds a welcome tactical layer to the action. The 8 bit conversion loses finesse against the 16 bit versions, but keeps the appeal of the concept. For a retro tactical action fan or someone curious about the Strike series adaptations, the title keeps a strategic interest and a real mission tension.
