Drag-on Dragoon sequel with a new protagonist and a slightly less dark world. Gameplay is improved but atmosphere loses some radicalism compared to the first entry. Less distinctive than its predecessor for genre fans, but remains a solid entry.

Description
Western edition of Drag-on Dragoon 2, released in 2006 by Square Enix as Drakengard 2. Cavia softens the bleakness of the first game with a more chivalric story around Nowe and the dragoness Legna, while keeping the ground/dragon two-layer formula that had become the series' signature.

Less abrasive than its forerunner, the sequel tempers its sonic chaos with more melodic orchestral themes, without renouncing its anxious strangeness. The music embraces the darkness of the story with a controlled gravity. This troubled, dramatic atmosphere extends the disturbing yet fascinating identity of the series.

Memorable bosses

Extending its elder with more fluidity, this sequel alternates ground melees and aerial jousts against titanic, misshapen creatures. Switching between the blade and the dragon's breath to bring down these guardians gives the fights a sweeping rhythm. Still steeped in tragic darkness, the whole cultivates a singular unease where every victory leaves a bitter taste.

Is Drakengard 2 still worth playing in 2026?

A sequel to Cavia's action game known in the West as Drakengard 2, Drag-on Dragoon 2 blends ground combat against swarms of enemies and dragon flight sections, in a dark fantasy world of unabashed bleakness. The tortured story, the desperate mood and the singular soundtrack extend the saga's disturbing identity, with a gameplay more accessible than the first. The combat repetition and dated tech weigh. An atmospheric action game to recommend for fans of dark fantasy and adult stories.
