The classic JRPG in all its warmth. The S version adds voice acting, a 2D mode and extra content that enrich an already charming tale. The combat breaks no new ground, but the bond you form with the party makes all the difference.

Memorable bosses

The grand JRPG tradition blossoms in fights where Pep Power timing, gear progression and chained attacks shape the tempo. Mordegon and the lords of corruption shift phases and resistances that reward reading the battle. The sweeping orchestral score and the classic charisma of each foe leave a lasting impression.

Is Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age still worth playing in 2026?

Dragon Quest XI S is a love letter to the classic JRPG, confident and assured. Its turn-based combat, without particular daring, shines through its clarity and perfectly tuned pacing. Akira Toriyama's design and a warm world make you want to press on, carried by a generous, well-built adventure. The S edition adds orchestrations, a retro 2D mode and welcome character stories. You might fault its sometimes tame narration and a leisurely start. But for anyone wanting a big, accessible, comfortable RPG, it ages effortlessly and remains an ideal gateway to the genre.
