Earthworm Jim, the European version of the Game Gear port of the slapstick adventure of the vigilante worm by Playmates. Shrinking the original's graphic extravagance to the handheld was a challenge, giving this conversion a curiosity value. Its interest lies in the licence's popularity and in the comparison, dear to fans, between this PAL cut and the game's other versions.
Is Earthworm Jim still worth playing in 2026?
A portable adaptation of Shiny's zany cult hit, Earthworm Jim follows a worm in a space suit through an absurd, humour packed world. The platformer blends blaster shooting, using the body as a whip or vine and offbeat sequences, but the Game Gear version suffers from pared down animation and cut levels. The streak of madness and the character design survive nonetheless. For a fan of eccentric platforming or someone nostalgic for Jim, the title keeps a likeability, below the 16 bit versions.
