Moving to a screen 160 pixels wide forces hard choices: the futuristic backgrounds shrink to a few repeated geometric motifs, the creatures lose their detail but keep an identifiable silhouette, and legibility takes priority over richness. That stripping back gives the stages a cold abstraction which suits the sequences outside time.
Writing ambient music on three square-wave voices is a tall order, and the answer lies in spacing: very long held notes, deliberate silences, no marked rhythm. The themes for the futuristic sections add dissonant intervals that break the calm, so the ear senses the change of era before the eye sees it.
Ecco - The Tides of Time, the sequel to the dolphin Ecco's adventures brought to Game Gear, released in Europe. An extension of a Sega series with a uniquely contemplative mood, it transposes a beloved aquatic world to handheld.
