Excellent ESPN/2K NHL hockey simulation, equivalent to NHL 2K5 on other consoles. Smooth gameplay, careful presentation. A very good alternative to EA Sports NHL for its year.

The ice records the game: skates carve accumulating scratches, scraped snow piles up along the boards, and the logo painted beneath the surface dulls as the period wears on. Since the camera stays low, that wear takes up a good half of the frame at every face-off.
The rink's own sound does all the work: the organ throws out its refrains at every stoppage, the goal horns blare, and recorded jingles fire according to the situation, as in a real arena. The music therefore does not accompany the game, it belongs to the building the game is played in.
A hockey sim by Visual Concepts under the ESPN label, sold at a reduced price in the pricing line that marked the brand that year. Its collecting interest is very low: a dated sports game, abundant and without scarcity, followed mainly in North America. A nostalgia piece for fans of virtual hockey of the Xbox era attached to the 2K approach.
Better with friends
Lively, physical ice hockey, where quick passes and bodychecks lend a heady tempo to multiplayer games. The competition swings between the finesse of plays and the unashamed brutality of contact, punctuated by scraps that draw laughs and raise the stakes. Simple to grasp, it delivers fast, snappy matches, perfect for back-to-back challenges where rivalry climbs from game to game.
Is ESPN NHL 2K5 still worth playing in 2026?
Visual Concepts' 2004 hockey continues the brand's aggressive strategy with a very low launch price and a presentation steeped in ESPN broadcasting. On ice play remains one of the most accessible of its era without sacrificing tactical depth, with believable line management and momentum. The franchise mode still proves entertaining to explore through several simulated seasons. The closure of online play and the absence of current rosters obviously weigh against NHL 25. Today, one of the finest NHL portraits on original Xbox and a strong pick for hockey fans and ESPN 2K collectors.
