An absolute master of the dungeon, Yuzo Koshiro unfurls a synthetic prog-rock of rare intensity, to which this Untold version adds sumptuous orchestral arrangements. Each labyrinthine floor throbs with an obsessive tension, supporting exploration up close. This unique sonic signature remains the soul of the saga.

Collector interest

Shin Sekaiju no Meikyuu Millennium no Shoujo is the Japanese edition of the first Etrian Odyssey remake with Story mode, equivalent to the Western Untold. Collector value comes from the distinct Japanese sleeve by Himukai, softer than the NIS America version, and from the quality of the Japanese voice recording in this narrative reworking of the founding entry.

An underrated gem

A remake of the very first Etrian Odyssey, it grafts on a story mode while preserving the original's stylus exploration and razor-sharp difficulty. As a niche genre demands, it stayed out of the spotlight. Whether discovering the series or revisiting its roots, it's a refined dungeon-crawler that rewards patience and method.

Is Shin Sekaiju no Meikyuu - Millennium no Shoujo still worth playing in 2026?

Released in 2013 on 3DS, Atlus' project is a remake of the very first Etrian Odyssey, a first person dungeon crawler where the exploration of a labyrinth comes with a map to draw yourself on the touch screen. This version adds a Story mode with characters and cutscenes, more accessible, alongside the more austere Classic mode. The deep class management, the demanding turn based combat and the satisfaction of completing your map forge a gripping loop. The austerity and the difficulty target an informed audience. An excellent dungeon crawler, recommended for fans of methodical exploration and of cartography.
