Bethesda graft the Oblivion formula onto the Capital Wasteland and the spell works straight away, even with stiff combat. Meeting Three Dog stays a major highlight and the atmospheric score has marked a generation of players for good.

Collector interest

Bethesda's revival of the saga, Fallout 3 brings the post-nuclear world to life in first-person open world, hailed as one of the console's great RPGs. Common in the West but markedly rarer in its Asian and Japanese pressings, its interest combines this major-classic status and this regional scarcity. A safe bet for fans of immersive open RPGs.

A cult cover

The power-armor helmet standing out against an ashen sky of ravaged lands, the image sums up the retro-futurist contrast dear to the series. The coldness of the steel and the desolation of the background announce a wasteland as vast as it is merciless. Spare and striking, it embodies post-nuclear wandering.

A questionable morality

Surviving a post-nuclear wasteland opens a spread of possibilities where stealing, gunning down innocents or even wiping a whole town off the map are just one option among many. A karma meter keeps an eye on your slips, but total freedom soon invites you to test the limits, and you catch yourself playing a survivor markedly less virtuous than advertised.

Is Fallout 3 still worth playing in 2026?

Released in 2008 on Xbox 360, Bethesda's Fallout 3 tips the series into first person and open world, and exploring the devastated wastes of post apocalyptic Washington stays fascinating. The S.P.E.C.I.A.L. system and V.A.T.S., which slows time to target limbs, blend role playing and action superbly. The total freedom, the memorable encounters and the retro futuristic 1950s atmosphere leave a lasting mark. The raw gunplay and a few technical issues have aged. But the adventure keeps a rare force. For fans of open world role playing, this classic remains essential today.
