This remake modernizes the detective novel without betraying its contemplative slowness: the character portraits, once frozen, now breathe, blink and sketch micro-expressions that give away a lie. The settings, a 1980s Japanese high school, are repainted in digital watercolor, empty rooms and courtyards at dusk. This hushed stillness makes the rare supernatural appearances of the title's legend all the more chilling.
The soundtrack cultivates a hushed tension in service of this school ghost story: thin synthetic pads, spaced piano notes and loaded silences that let unease settle between the lines. The themes darken near the macabre revelations, while a spectral motif returns to haunt the scenes tied to the legend. The music favors atmosphere over spectacle, distilling a muffled dread, perfectly matched to the nocturnal investigation.
