A side-scrolling action-RPG inspired by Xanadu set in an elf and dwarf universe. Dark and dense atmosphere, satisfying progression. Less famous than Zelda II but equally deserving.

Collector interest

Famicom pressing from 1987, a side-scrolling action-RPG born from the collaboration between Hudson and Falcom, derived from the Xanadu branch on home computers. The Japanese version is the original run of a title whose twilight mood and equipment-driven progression left a lasting mark on fans. Its collecting interest rests on this Falcom lineage and on the status of an 8-bit action-RPG classic, sought in Japanese pressing by purists attached to the game's source.

Is Faxanadu still worth playing in 2026?

A Hudson Soft action RPG, Faxanadu has a warrior explore a vast fantasy empire stricken by decline, blending side-view platforming, combat, dungeons and towns where you equip and progress. The twilight mood, the careful art direction and the Metroid-like adventure structure make it a memorable platformer-RPG, derived from the Xanadu series. The slightly stiff handling has aged. A gem to rediscover for fans of NES action RPG and 2D exploration adventure.
