Hidari's illustrations give the remake its colour. Slender lines, washed tones, simple drapery: this style with the look of an old watercolour suits an archaic tale and cuts against the graphic fashion of the other entries. Around it, the tactical map keeps the geometric austerity of the original game, while the dungeons, explored in volume from behind, bring a depth new to the series.
Broader and darker, the score embraces the tragedy of Alm and Celica with vibrant strings and poignant choirs. The themes, of rare nobility, underline the duality of the story and the intensity of the battles. This orchestral richness, among the most moving in the series, elevates every moment of the adventure.
Two childhood friends each lead their own army on a continent cut in two, and you play both in alternation without them ever meeting. One advances by force, the other by faith, and each discovers separately that the two worshipped deities feed on their own faithful. Their late reunion settles nothing: it only forces a choice as to which of the two errors will cost least.
