Toaplan stays at ground level with a biplane hurled above land battlefields: armoured convoys, bridges, anti-aircraft batteries, ships at the quay. The sheets of fire sweeping the screen leave black marks on the scenery, and the chain explosions stay readable despite the density of enemy fire.
Toaplan's sound team writes military campaign themes here with assertive melodies, carried by steady bass and dry snares. The loops run long enough to hold demanding stages, and a tension motif returns systematically as the heaviest targets appear.
Fire Shark PAL is the European edition of the Toaplan shooter, distributed by Dreamworks Games on Megadrive. Its collector value comes from the cult status of the Toaplan studio in the shmup subculture and from the fact that the Megadrive version is one of the rare official console ports of the Toaplan arcade game.
