Firewatch tells a story of isolation and doubt in the Wyoming wilderness, carried by the radio banter between Henry and Delilah. The writing is superb and the dusk-lit vistas are gorgeous. Short and linear, yet the emotion lingers long after.

Story

Alone in a fire lookout, a radio your only tether, a boss you never see: this forest two-hander makes dialogue the very substance of play. Against a slow-burning mystery, the writing handles escape, regret and isolation with a disarming truth of observation.

An underrated gem

People often fixate on its ending, judged a letdown, and forget everything that comes before. Yet few games capture so well the intimacy of a voice at the other end of a radio, amid the solitude of Wyoming's wide open spaces. The bond forged with your supervisor, carried by dialogue of rare honesty, is well worth the trip. More experience than challenge, it's for anyone who can savor an adult story and a lived-in silence.

Is Firewatch still worth playing in 2026?

Firewatch remains a model of environmental storytelling. The Wyoming lookout tower, the vast forests and the radio bond between Henry and Delilah create a rare intimacy, carried by exceptional voice acting. The walking is slow, interaction limited, and you don't play for challenge but for emotion and mystery. Its much-debated ending still divides. Short and purely narrative, it won't suit action seekers. But for anyone after an adult, melancholy and beautifully written story, its charm stays intact on Switch, nearly a decade later. Few games make conversation feel this alive across a wilderness.
