First Game Boy Goemon. 2D platforming in a fanciful medieval Japan, rescuing the kidnapped Ebisumaru. Solid Konami production for its time, signature humorous writing. Shorter and rougher than the later Kurofunetou no Nazo, but a good intro to the portable franchise.

Is Ganbare Goemon - Sarawareta Ebisumaru still worth playing in 2026?

The first Goemon on Game Boy, Sarawareta Ebisumaru launches the series on handheld with a platform adventure in a whimsical medieval Japan, where the hero sets out to free his pal Ebisumaru. The varied levels, absurd humor and caricatural bosses lay the foundations of the formula, even if the execution shows the constraints of the early days. Cruder than its sequels, it keeps an originator's value. A curiosity for Goemon fans and explorers of the Japanese Game Boy catalog.
