Ambitious open world set in a faithfully reproduced London. Freedom of movement in a credible European capital is appreciable. Technical production is impressive but gameplay and storytelling lack the fluidity needed to rival GTA.

Description
An urban open world by Team Soho and SCEE released in 2002 (Europe) and 2003 (USA). Inspired by British crime cinema and shot like a Guy Ritchie film, it follows an ex-criminal and a cop crossing paths in a strikingly detailed London. No minimap, no HUD: the street is the only guide.

A questionable morality

Beneath its gritty London thriller looks, the adventure is about slipping into a crook's shoes: you rob, you tear through traffic, you gun down the competition across a city modeled in earnest. The plot invokes a family to rescue to justify the carnage, yet most of your playtime is spent embodying exactly the sort of man the police are after.

Is Getaway, The still worth playing in 2026?

An open world action game from Sony London, The Getaway plunges the player into a London recreated with striking realism for its time, following a gangster plot of dark, cinematic tone. The absence of an interface, the realistic driving and the Guy Ritchie style staging give it a strong identity. The rigid driving, dated gunfights and a frustrating difficulty weigh on it. A title for fans of criminal open worlds with a British mood and the curious about a pioneering cinematic approach on PS2.
