A platformer with Gex the gecko and pop culture references. First Crystal Dynamics trilogy entry, snappy 2D levels, omnipresent cartoony TV humor. Pleasant for PSone 2D platformer fans, soon eclipsed by more ambitious 3D sequels.
Crystal Dynamics' first Gex, the Japanese NTSC-J version published by BMG Interactive. A Western comedic platformer's Japanese release was a footnote, poorly received in a market dominated by other genres, hence a limited run. Rarer than the Western versions but with weak demand: a moderate valuation where only sealed (toward 200 EUR) stands out, loose staying very affordable.
Is Gex still worth playing in 2026?
A platformer from Crystal Dynamics, Gex stars a TV addicted gecko sucked into a world of channels parodying horror films, cartoons and small screen clichés. The ever present humour carried by the hero's one liners and the variety of themed worlds make the salt of this 2D adventure. The slightly stiff handling and a sometimes repetitive level design weigh. An endearing, talkative platformer to recommend for fans of 90s mascots and offbeat television humour.
