Collector interest

Japanese Compile cartridge from 1993, released at the very end of the Game Gear's commercial cycle in Japan and later folded into the M2 Aleste Collection. The original Japanese print run was very small, even shorter than for the first GG Aleste, which made it one of the harder Compile shmups to find sealed before 2020. The modern compilation eases gameplay access without lowering the value of the period cartridge.

An underrated gem

Compile went again with a sequel richer in weapons and ideas, pushing the graphical limits of Sega's handheld even further. Confined to Japan, it stayed the preserve of importers and savvy collectors. Its generosity and edge will delight anyone after a demanding action shooter on a small screen.

Is GG Aleste II still worth playing in 2026?

A direct enriched sequel, GG Aleste II refines the first game's formula with an even more generous weapon system, more complex patterns and even better technical production. Compile remains an absolute master of portable 8 bit shoot with this particularly accomplished sequel. The chiptune soundtrack and the neon art direction still work admirably. For anyone wanting the absolute peak of vertical shoot on Game Gear and unafraid of a serious challenge, an absolute recommendation without any hesitation today still here truly indeed.
