Description
Space shoot-em-up from the Gradius series, developed by Konami and published in Japan in October 2001. The Vic Viper battles the Bacterian empire through horizontal stages including volcanoes, bubbles and enemy fortresses. Selectable capsule power-up system, colossal bosses and difficulty loops. Original Japanese version, published in the West as Gradius Advance and Gradius Galaxies.
Japanese edition of the GBA Gradius, distributed under the Gradius Generation name and clearly distinct from the Western Advance and Galaxies versions. Konami rigid case with a Japanese obi marked Gradius Generation, more minimalist cover art than the Western releases. Konami Japan run was short, and the period co existence with other in house shooters such as Nemesis II places it in a precise lineage that Japanese completists identify by obi and label line.
Memorable bosses
Faithful to the series' legacy, this stellar trip punctuates its zones with armored cores and fortresses to dismantle under a hail of fire. The power-up gauge, composed before the assault, makes every preparation a strategic choice. Readable yet formidable, these guardians and their final rematch corridor carry on the great tradition of the horizontal shooter with rigor.
Is Gradius Generation still worth playing in 2026?
Gradius Generation, released as Gradius Advance and then Gradius Galaxies depending on the region, stands as one of the most solid horizontal shooters on the GBA. The capsule library to invest into options, shield and speed reads cleanly despite the small resolution, and the stages mix nods to the saga with fresh layouts. The difficulty stays pure Gradius, meaning unforgiving. For fans of classic Konami shooting or anyone seeking a portable entry to the series, this remains a strong pick today.
