Growlanser is a Career Soft tactical RPG with an original real-time grid combat system. Mature and well-written war scenario, likable characters and inimitable anime visual charm. An unjustly overlooked niche title outside Japan, highly valued by tactical RPG fans.

Is Growlanser still worth playing in 2026?

A tactical RPG from Career Soft, the first link in a long saga, Growlanser offers real time battles on the map where you issue orders to your units, in a hybrid approach between strategy and action. Satoshi Urushihara's character design, the narrative choices and the branching replayability are winning. The lack of an original Western localisation and a demanding system limit access. A singular tactical for fans of Japanese strategy and the curious about multiple ending RPGs.
