Cinematic action platformer by Okiane and Vivendi Universal featuring a child in a world of darkness. The narrative progression is impressive and levels visually inventive. Difficult but fair, Heart of Darkness is an ambitious and memorable title too little known on PS1.

An underrated gem

A perennial no-show of gaming, this cinematic platformer took years to release, carried by lavish cutscenes and an Éric Chahi-style hero. Its stiff controls and relative brevity tempered the reception. But its atmosphere, dialogue-free storytelling and beauty make it a memorable adventure for those nostalgic for Another World.

Is Heart of Darkness still worth playing in 2026?

A cinematic platformer from Eric Chahi and Amazing Studio, Heart of Darkness follows young Andy off to rescue his dog in a world of shadows, in the line of Another World but in colour and with sumptuous cutscenes. The art direction, the animation and the staging stay striking, carried by an orchestral score. The trial and error gameplay and a sharp difficulty call for patience. A landmark work to recommend for fans of atmospheric platform adventure and strong visual storytelling.
