A demanding, snappy Toaplan horizontal shooter with well-balanced power-ups. Visually dated, truly pleasant for old-school shmup fans.

Toaplan locks its horizontal shooter inside corridors of rock and white-hot metal: lava flows, incandescent walls, warehouses bristling with turrets. The ship fires in four directions clearly signalled by the colour of the beam, turning each orientation into immediate visual information.
Tatsuya Uemura signs themes darker here than in his vertical shooters, with weighty bass lines and melodies that descend instead of climbing. The chosen timbres evoke the heat and the stifling closeness of the corridors crossed, and the rare passages in a major key arrive only after the hardest confrontations.
Hellfire PAL is the European edition of the Toaplan horizontal shooter, distributed by Sega Europe on Megadrive. Its collector value comes from the cult status of Toaplan in the shmup subculture and from the fact that the PAL version remains one of the rarest official European Toaplan cartridges.
Is Hellfire still worth playing in 2026?
A horizontal shoot by Toaplan, Hellfire offers an original four direction shot system changeable mid game, which brings real tactical depth. The fantastic art direction, readable patterns and energetic soundtrack make this title a solid reference of the Toaplan Mega Drive catalogue. Visually timeless thanks to polished pixel art, the title keeps real effectiveness and pleases fans of demanding horizontal shoots largely deserving discovery today still on Mega Drive truly here indeed for any genre fan.
