Crystal Dynamics platformer-action game with a young shepherd and his fantastic animals. The original approach of herding mythical creatures is charming. Technically modest but creatively endearing, it is an overlooked niche title on PS2.

Description
An Eidos and Core Design action-adventure released in 2002, directed by Toby Gard (Lara Croft's creator). Herdy, a young trainer, must lead his flock of whimsical creatures back across a colorful island, exploiting each species' traits. Platforming and creature capture, in a less strategic Pikmin spirit.

Is Herdy Gerdy still worth playing in 2026?

An action adventure from Core Design, Herdy Gerdy leans on an original creature herding concept, where the hero must guide, catch and pen quirky beasts across a colourful world tinged with platforming and puzzles. The warm art direction and the freshness of the idea cut against the more conventional action of the era. The temperamental camera and an uneven production slow the fun. An endearing curiosity for fans of original concepts and family adventure games from the early PS2.
