IO Interactive shift the tone with the narrative, linear Absolution that drifts from the usual sandbox. The nun hit lands as shocking, the contracts mode extends longevity, but purists miss the legendary freedom of Blood Money.

"Captivating"
A vision mode tints the whole screen sepia and reveals in orange what the eye cannot see: guards' routes traced on the floor, targets highlighted through partitions, usable objects outlined. This graphic layer laid over very concrete settings, a southern motel, a Chinatown laundry, a library, entirely structures how you read a place.
The studio parts with the composer who had defined the series' sound and commissions a minimal score, low electronic textures, sparse pulses, almost no melody. The break was debated among regulars, but it serves an entry in which 47 no longer works to order: with no choirs and no agency theme, there is no longer an orchestra to legitimize the acts.
The assassin becomes a protector: ordered to eliminate a teenage girl from the same genetic program as himself, 47 saves her instead of executing her and turns his own employers against him. The story then strips him of everything, contract, logistics and suit, and forces him to improvise in a provincial America that resembles none of the series' capitals.
A Hitman entry with a more scripted and accessible turn, met with a mixed reception from stealth purists but with very polished production. Printed widely, it stays unremarkable and lightly priced, without scarcity. Its collector interest is modest, a divisive entry of a major franchise, sought mainly by series completists rather than for underlying value or speculative demand.
A questionable morality
The trade of contract killer is presented here as an art of discretion: disguises, poisons and piano wire, anything to eliminate the target without leaving a trace. You admire the elegance of the hit, and the game even rewards you for tidy work, which amounts to handing out nice grades for paid murders without ever sensing any wrongdoing.
Is Hitman - Absolution still worth playing in 2026?
Released in 2012 on Xbox 360, IO Interactive's Hitman Absolution is the most cinematic and accessible entry in the series, carried by impressive crowds and a smooth disguise system. The polished staging and the personal story around Agent 47 contrast with the usual coldness. The more linear structure and the sometimes finicky disguises disappointed sandbox purists. But the Contracts mode revives the spirit of creative, free assassination. For fans of stealth, the series curious and those seeking a spectacular way in, this title keeps a real interest today.
