A Sega rail shooter, The House of the Dead 2 unfolds an unapologetic B-movie horror aesthetic: a harbor town overrun by zombies, sewers, manors and grotesque creatures modeled in 3D. A nocturnal mood, over-the-top voice acting and monumental bosses make for a gaudy, gleeful nightmare. A generous art direction, built for light-gun spectacle.
The House of the Dead 2's soundtrack alternates tense horror rock with emphatic orchestral pieces, punctuated by thunderous boss themes. Nervy strings, dramatic brass and hammering percussion match the rhythm of on-rail shooting and the surge of the hordes. Theatrical, grandiloquent music, perfectly in step with the game's gleeful excess.

Gun in hand, you cross a nightmare swarming with zombies bursting from everywhere, finger locked on the trigger: aiming true and reloading at the right moment becomes second nature. The co-op thrill, with two players, multiplies the intensity of the shoot-out. Snappy, boss-heavy and deliciously kitsch, a must of light-gun shooting on the console.
The NTSC release of The House of the Dead 2 is the US version of the Dreamcast port, distributed by Sega with Light Gun support and a wider print. Collector focus on first pressings without the Sega All Stars band and on copies with their original manual intact.
Memorable bosses
Paced like a string of pistol duels, this rail shooter lines up creatures named after the tarot's arcana, from the flying Magician to the imposing Emperor. Each demands hitting a precise weak point under the pressure of time and ammo. Topped with a voice acting that turned cult through sheer kitsch, the whole thing makes these face-offs a gleeful, memorable arcade rollercoaster.
Better with friends
An on-rails shooter steeped in B-movie cheese, best enjoyed with two light guns blasting the zombies on screen, calling out attacks and shielding hostages. The fun grows from coordination shouted aloud and fits of laughter at the gloriously bad lines. A proper gun helps you make the most of it, but the good-natured co-op makes it irresistible to restart.
Is House of the Dead 2, The still worth playing in 2026?
A reference rail shooter in the horror vein, House of the Dead 2 shines with its relentless arcade pace and its proudly B grade horror atmosphere. The over the top dialogue and cult voice acting are folklore by now, yet the level layouts and hostage handling remain surprisingly sturdy. Without a proper light gun the experience loses a lot, but with the right peripheral or a well tuned pad, the shoot still works wonderfully in short bursts. A historic piece that keeps inspiring modern arcade releases.
