Wii-exclusive grindhouse spin-off, knowing parody of B-movie horror with blood, swearing and intentionally caricatural characters. Solid rail shooter, plenty of weapons, themed levels (sewer, asylum, swamp) well crafted. Decent difficulty, local co-op, excellent English voice acting. Truly unique atmosphere in the genre, heavy black humor. A brilliant oddity that fully owns its art direction.

Description
Rail shooter developed by Headstrong Games and published by Sega in North America in March 2009. Special Agent G and his partner Washington neutralize a criminal organization conducting zombie experiments in kitsch and bloody B-movie settings. Wiimote pointing, excessive dismemberment, grindhouse-style screaming dialogue and monstrous bosses. House of the Dead franchise spin-off presented as a 1970s B-horror film.

Everything is treated like a worn film print. Headstrong Games covers the screen with scratches, burnt dust and frame jumps, drops in cards announcing a missing reel, and sets its titles in the garish typography of a 1970s B-picture. Saturated reds and dilapidated fairground sets complete the pastiche, held without flinching all the way to the credits.
The music comes straight out of neighbourhood cinemas. Spring-reverb guitars, funk bass, greasy brass and wah-wah make up pieces that could score a 1974 car chase, and the title song, sung in a voice far too serious for the subject, closes the joke. The gap between that retro elegance and the carnage on screen is what gives the device its bite.

Blasting the undead in an unabashed B-movie orgy, gory and hilarious, right down to the deliberately over-the-top dialogue: this rail shooter bets on snappiness and unrestrained humour. Reloading, aiming true and triggering score combos delivers an instant pleasure. Two-player, the carnage becomes gleeful. Spectacular, deranged and fiercely fun, a delightful parody tribute.

House of the Dead, The - Overkill (Wii) price, value & rarity
Is House of the Dead, The - Overkill still worth playing in 2026?
A rail shooter from Headstrong and Sega, The House of the Dead Overkill fully embraces its tribute to grindhouse exploitation cinema, between outrageous dialogue, scratched film aesthetics and proudly crude humour. The remote aiming, the frantic pace and the combo system energise a vent perfectly calibrated for the console. The unabashed vulgarity will not please everyone. An excellent light gun game for fans of arcade shooting and of self aware B movies in multiplayer.
