The Evolution edition of KOF 99, more generous and technically superior. The Striker system stays gripping, the cast is cult and the snap is real. A solid classic for fans.

This is where the striker system is born, slipping in an ally who bursts mid-fight to break defences: a breath of fresh air in the team mechanic. The clashes gain in surprise and strategy, without losing any of their edge. Rich in characters and superbly crafted, a defining turning point in the SNK saga.
Addictiveness
"Obsessive"
The arrival of the striker system adds a layer of team strategy that invites you to test a thousand trios of fighters. Winning a round immediately calls for the next, and taming the support calls rewards every match. The balance is sometimes up for debate, but the density of SNK versus and the tension of the duels make it a safe bet you happily restart.
The NTSC release of The King of Fighters Evolution is the US version of the Dreamcast port of KOF '99 Evolution, distributed by SNK in an extremely short print. Collector value within the same segment as Dream Match 1999: official SNK Dreamcast in the West, absolute scarcity and continuously rising value since SNK USA ceased.
Better with friends
A beefed-up reread of the famous team tournament, where the gauge and reinforcements energize the three-on-three. The competition gains offensive options and mind games, rewarding those who dare call their allies at just the right beat. Its design choices spark debate among fans, but the rich cast and the snappy fights electrify every face-off.
Is King of Fighters, The - Evolution still worth playing in 2026?
A technical overhaul of the Neo Geo 99 release, this Evolution introduces 3D effects for the backgrounds and a few roster tweaks. The Striker system that debuted in this entry remains debated yet adds a real strategic layer. The Dreamcast conversion stays fluid and clean. Without matching the balance of 98 or 2002, the title keeps a genuine historical interest for understanding how the series transitioned into a fresh narrative cycle, and retains a particular fire of its own generation.
